Papers consist of correspondence, receipts, and other items. Professional and business correspondence (1868-1881) includes letters to Brawley regarding legal cases handled by Porter & Brawley, railroad litigation and other legal cases, reorganization of the South Carolina Railroad, railroad stocks, personal investments, and other matters. Correspondents include Samuel W. Melton, D.H. Chamberlain, Charles R. Miles, James Hemphill, Myers, Rutherford & Co. (New York, N.Y.), C.P. Aldrich, and many other lawyers in New York, South Carolina, and elsewhere. Personal correspondence includes a letter (1868) to Brawley from A.C. Haskell in Columbia (S.C.) discussing the ordination and prospects of Albert R. Stuart and religious matters; Brawley's letter (ca. 1858?) to his fiancee discussing his views on what English and American history and literature a young woman should read; letters (n.d.) to Brawley from his wife Marion; and letters (n.d.) to Brawley from Anna E. Gray regarding her suspicions that her savings are being embezzled. Receipts (ca. 1870-ca. 1885) are for purchases of stock and other investments as well as purchases of furniture, clothing, hardware, and other goods in Charleston (S.C.) and New York (N.Y). Other items include cancelled checks; calling cards; pamphlets; and legal documents, mostly pertaining to railroad litigation.

Charleston, S.C. attorney, judge, South Carolina state representative, and U.S. representative. Born in Chester, S.C., Brawley served in the Confederate army during the Civil War and was admitted to the bar in 1866. After serving as solicitor of the Chester circuit court, he moved to Charleston where he practiced law in partnership with W.D. Porter, and later, Joseph W. Barnwell.
